One of the oldest of all
Vedas, Rig-Veda
forms a very significant part of Vedas.
It is difficult to determine
the time when Rig-Veda was written down
however, if some sources are to be believed,
it was around 1200BC to 1500BC. Rig-Veda
has 1028 Sanskrit hymns meant to invoke
the blessings of Sun god, Rain god, Wind
god, fire god etc.
Yajur-Veda
Yajur
Veda is another branch of
Vedas, which is about the knowledge of sacrificial
rituals. As the Sanskrit word Yajur means
ideal way to invoke blessings of gods. Yajur
Veda is of two types, one Krishna Yajur Veda
or the Black Yajur Veda and the Shukla Yajur
Veda or the White Yajur Veda.
Under Krishna Yajur Veda,
there are three branches but now only one
is available.
Saam-Veda
The third significant part
that Vedas contains is the Sama
Veda, pronounced as Saam
Ved. The Sanskrit word Sama in English would
mean hymn and Veda is Collection of wisdom.
So together it means collection of knowledge
about hymns. Sama Veda deals in the study
of music and chanting to please the divine.
Initially, there were in
all 1000 Shakhas (Branches) in Sama Veda
Atharva-Veda
he last and final section
of Vedas is the Atharva
Vedas, which enlightens
with the knowledge of healing and magical
spells.
The name for this Veda
is derived from the name of Sage Atharvan,
as it was him who compiled this Veda. It
was earlier referred to as Atharvangirasa.
